Independent Energy Solutions

Photovoltiac Systems (PV)

Independent Energy Solutions (IES) designs, supplies and builds everything from conventional grid-tied photovoltaic systems to full utilty-scale and complex, hybrid, remote/off-grid solutions. We've developed complex systems that power entire islands along with standard, commercial grid-tied applications right here at home. Wherever you need clean, renewable energy, we can help you get it!

Grid-Tied

The vast majority of our PV projects tie into the local utility grid. Our extensive engineering experience means we know how to optimize system production to match local tariffs, create installations with minimal structural impact, and make safe, reliable connections. With this in mind, IES uses nothing but state-of-the-art, first-line components from top suppliers such as Kyocera, Sharp, Uni-Solar and SatCon.

Remote & Off-Grid

So how DO you power an island? The answer is more complicated than it looks. While solar works fine during the day, what happens at night? And although capable of reliable output, limited fuel supplies can make diesel generation systems expensive to operate (not to mention the carbon production). IES takes the best of both worlds by combining a PV array with battery storage and on-demand diesel generation. Our "smart" systems constantly monitor loads to bring the generators on and off-line as needed; with batteries acting to cushion the transitions and provide power when demand is low. Plus, our logistics expertise means we know how to get materials, parts and supplies to the remote site for an on-time, on-budget project.

Energy Rebates & Incentives

Sizing, costing and positioning a PV system used to be a lot easier (at least in Califonia). Point the panels south, make sure you had enough capacity to zero out your utility electric use, and get your rebate. It didn't matter if the system was oversized or even if it was installed where the sun doesn't shine -- you'd still get paid.

Starting in 2007, with the $3.2 billion California Solar Initiative, PV installations are more challenging. First, all new grid-connected systems must include more advanced metering systems and there are new utility tariff options. Second, rebates themselves are now based on actual system performance and not on straight capacity. Installations that aren't optimized for maximum production during peak summer usage periods will be penalized. Plus, there are new, tougher mandated warranty standards.

All of this means that proper equipment design, selection, engineering, installation and after-sales support are more important than ever. By choosing IES as your energy project partner, you are assured of a "Total Solution" that's tailored to fit today's more complex regulatory environment.

At IES, we don't just start and finish with the energy part of the solution. We can also provide any support infrastructure you may need including equipment buildings, roofs, pads and other structures. For example, you may not have the building roof area to support the size PV system you want. But, integrating PV into a new carport over an existing parking lot can be a great way to leverage your space cost-effectively. Think creatively, think outside the box, think IES!
