Independent Energy Solutions

San Diego County Operations Center

358 kW Carport / Shade Structure Photovoltaic System

San Diego County Solar Electric SystemThis system, owned by San Diego Gas & Electric, was designed and constructed by Independent Energy Solutions (IES) on the County’s new Operations Center parking facility. It is now the largest solar energy project on County property and is capable of generating nearly 650,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually (enough to power 107 average single-family homes).

The installation also features 24 custom steel shade structures designed and built by IES.

  • PV capacity: 415.38 kWdc @ (STC), 358.68 kWac CEC Rating
  • Electricity production: 640,484 kWh annually (estimated)
  • Carbon offset: 376 tons annually (SDG&E estimate)
  • Modules: 1,932 Kyocera KD215GXLFBS Modules
  • Inverter: (1) Satcon PVS375 (480v)
  • Mounting system: Unirac Sunframe Rails – 5° tilt

GSA - Chet Holified Federal Building

914 kW Rooftop Photovoltaic System

Chet Holifield Rooftop Solar ArrayDesigned and built by Independent Energy Solutions (IES) for the General Services Administration (GSA), this is the 2nd largest photovoltaic (PV) system in Orange County, California. (IES also built the largest system in Orange County for The Capital Group at 1.15 MW.)

The project was funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and will be used as a case study for future GSA / Federal Government solar electric projects. Unique features include a ballasted, zero roof penetrations mounting system and a design that used all USA-made, off-the-shelf components.

Specifications

  • PV capacity: 914 kWdc (STC), 798 kWac (CEC)
  • Electricity production: 1,445,000 kWh annually (estimated)
  • Carbon offset: 1,874,00 lbs annually (estimate based on natural gas)
  • Modules: (3808) Solarworld 240 monocrystaline
  • Inverters: Advanced Energy - (1) Solaron 500kW, 480V, 97.5% CEC efficiency; (1) Solaron, 333kW, 4809V, 97.5 CEC efficiency
  • Mounting system: 15° Sunlink ballasted solution

Capital Group

1.15 MW Shade Structure Photovoltaic System

Capital Group Solar Array - Aerial View
Designed and built by Independent Energy Solutions, this is currently the largest single photovoltaic system in Orange County, California. Engineered to fit on pre-existing shade structures over the Capital Group's parking garages, the system provides roughly 50% of the facility's data center and central plant energy needs.

With tax breaks and other incentives, the estimated payback on the Capital Group's investment is 5 years with energy savings totaling $14 million over 25 years. This project illustrates how, even in an economic recession, it still pays to "go solar".

Specifications

  • Customer: The Capital Group Companies
  • PV capacity: 1,149 kWdc (STC), 993 kWac (CEC)
  • Electricity production: 1,700,000 kWh annually (estimated)
  • Carbon offset: 2,205,000 lbs annually (estimate based on natural gas)
  • Modules: (5,472) Kyocera KD210GX-LPU
  • Inverters: (1) SatCon Technology PVS-250 (240V), (2) SatCon Technology PVS-375 (480V)
  • Mounting system: Custom racking attached to existing shade structure

Marine Corps Recruit Depot - San Diego

856kW Roof Mounted Photovoltaic System

MCRD San Diego Solar ArrayOne of the largest U.S. military PV systems in the Navy's Southwest region at .85 megawatts, this design/build project was completed by IES in two separate phases through two separate contractors, Syska Hennessy and SDG&E. An unusual feature is the very lightweight installation with no roof penetrations.

Specifications

  • Customer: U.S. Navy
  • PV capacity: 856 kWdc @ STC, 726 kWac @ CEC
  • Electricity production: 1,269,000 kWh annually (estimated)
  • Carbon offset: 1,646,000 lbs annually (estimate based on natural gas)
  • Modules: 1312 – Kyocera KD205GX-LP, 2,550 Solarworld SW230 mono
  • Inverters: 1 SatCON AE-225-60-PV-D, 2 SatCON PVS-135, 1 SatCON PVS-250 - 208v
  • Mounting system: UniRac S-5! Clip (panels at roofline 18° tilt)
