Solar Carport Shines for US Navy

US Naval Station Pt. Loma Solar Ribbon Cutting

Independent Energy Solutions (IES) today announced completion of a 68.6 kW solar electric carport for the US Navy at Naval Station Pt. Loma in San Diego, California. The system consists of 330 photovoltaic panels designed to produce about 80,000 kWh of electricity per year or enough to power about 14 homes.

According to Linda Strand, IES President, "This project is a great illustration of IES' commitment to designing and building creative and cost-effective renewable energy solutions for our military forces."

Carports often offer great locations for solar since they are usually fully exposed to the sun's energy and the space is generally clear from other machinery or equipment such as HVAC.

System Specifcations:

  • Inverter: Satcon AE-75-60-PV-D, 75kW, 3-Ph, 208Vac
  • 330 Sharp ND208-U1, 208Wdc
  • 68.6 kWdc at Standard Test Conditions (1000W/m2, air mass 1.5 global spectrum, 25°C cell temp.)
  • 60.5 kWdc at PVUSA Test Conditions (1000W/m2, 21°C ambient temp., 1m/s wind speed)
  • 57.8 kWac at California Energy Commission rating
